Ban Tong Seafood Restaurant - Clementi Ave 5

This place was where we used to visit for some zi char food when the stall was still located in a coffee shop in Ghim Moh. It shifted away and we never knew where it went.

It was quite a coincidence when my uncle stopped for coffee at the coffee shop in Clementi Ave 5 (beside the Police Station) and recognise the zhi char lady. Around the same time, I got an email from the owner it had moved after it found them self on one of my previous blog post.

So, it looks like it's time to go back there for dinner. We has since gone back a few times and this was the most recent photos.

Here was what we ate:

Ban Tong Seafood Restaurant - Flat Chicken with Fish Paste

Flat Chicken! They had the whole chicken de-boned, meat taken out and replaced with fish paste!

It's fish paste with chicken skin deep fried and served flattened. It looks like it requires quite a bit of work! How was the taste? We kind of like it! You imagine it to be roast/fried chicken and when you bite it, it's fish!

Ban Tong Seafood Restaurant - Lotus Root Soup

We ordered two big servings of soup. Here's the lotus root and pork rib soup.
Decent but slightly salty soup.

Ban Tong Seafood Restaurant - Veg dish

Our obligatory veggie dish. Kind of like the veggies of the day.
Simple and good, and it provided us our fibre.

Ban Tong Seafood Restaurant - Fish Dish

The nyonya style curry fish head. The sauce was tasty and the fish was fresh.
Perfect for walloping up with hot rice!

Ban Tong Seafood Restaurant - Fried Crayfish

This was the dish that we missed! Their cereal crayfish. (Mai Pian Hay Po).
Chunks of crayfish yanked out of the shell and deep fried and topped and mixed with cereal.

The perfect dish for lazy folks like us, the best way to eat crayfish! It is also so good! Beats prawns anytime!

Ban Tong Seafood Restaurant - Yam Ring

The ladies at home love yam ring. The outer yam ring was light and fluffy. The inner part of the ring was moist but too oily too. Nice crunch on the outside and soft yam texture inside.

Oh yes, we love to pick on the 'treasures' inside. I like the fried cashews!
Their prices are quite reasonable and portions big too.

It gets a bit busy on weekends, so you got to wait a while, but week nights are OK if you need to meet up with friends or relatives for a zhi-char makan.

Economic Kuey Teow that's not really cheap. haha...

This was lunch for Saturday afternoon, tapow-ed from the Economic Noodles stall at a Kopitiam in Clementi West St 2, just beside the post office.

I was lazy to go out the whole day, so sis tapow this for me.

Was delicious, and the drumstick is so huge. Together with brinjals and garlic shoots.
$3.50, why do they call it economic? haha... Well, comfort food.

Curry Fish Head @ Kopitiam beside Clementi West St 2 market

Errr, I don't know the name of the kopitiam, but we have eaten here a few times. hehe.. I don't know about you, but our family, we have nick names for different places to eat. Eg, Uncle Kopitiam and Aunty Kopitiam, Tua Long Gao (big drain) etc..

Well, this one is Orange colour kopitiam beside the Clementi West St 2 market.
Few nites ago, we went over to have dinner.

Ordered 3 things only. I like their Curry Fish Head very much. I can literally drink down all the artery choking curry!

This is Fan Su Yeh too. It's different from yesterday's post right?
I think its a diff species, and these are the very young shoots.

Need to eat more veg, so we ordered Kai Lan as well.

It sure was very satisfactory as the fish head is huge, it's around 2 men's palm size.
$32 for the 3 dishes above and 3 rice.

Milo Dinosaur @ Cheese Prata Shop, Clementi Road

Had this a few nites ago, while passing some things that I was asked to buy by someone while holidaying in Bangkok.

I had eaten, and I don't really eat supper, so I only ordered a drink. It's called Milo Dinosaur. I wonder how this drink got its name!

A treat of Milo Dinosaur to those who can guess who I had the drink with. haha..

Thaksin Beef Noodles @ Seah Im

If you want Halal Beef Noodles, this is a good place to try. Their soup base is very good, and it also says no MSG.

I usually eat at the one in Clementi Central, but 2 colleagues ate this instead. This is the original stall.

You should try it! I usually order medium size.

A whole group of BSF friends, we went Haato to chat after dinner. Some were busy playing the Soduku, others Jenga, yet others taking photos of each other.

Most of us ordered the different kinds of ice cream. Just 2 pictures here of the ice cream and waffle that was eaten.

We went to the Ridgewood Close. Lots of boardgames to play, a bit like Settlers.

Evertop Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice @ Clementi Ave 2 (Previously Tanglin Halt)

This shop, Evertop Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice was very popular. It's a halal chicken rice place. It was previously at Commonwealth Drive / Tanglin Halt. It has moved for a few months to Clementi Ave 2.

It used to be a stall in a HDB coffeeshop. Now it is 2 shoplots in Clementi.

This is how it looks like now.

The veg dish.

"Lor Nerng". Braised Eggs.

This is Chicken Feet. (with the bones removed)

We ordered an extra bowl of ah char.

One whole chicken.

We had 7 of us. All of us thought that the food and portions at Tanglin Halt was better.

Curry Noodles Chicken @ Varinice Clementi

Quick post. What do I like to eat in Clementi Central? Do you know that there's absolutely no restaurants in Clementi?

The only restaurant is Pizza Hut! (and now maybe the Sumoya). All the food you get from the food market, coffee shop food courts, or fast food outlets like KFC and Mcdonalds.

This is what I ate for dinner. I don't know why, but I like the curry noodles from this stall. I always order this in the kuey teow version. It is covered with curry sauce and a steamed chicken wing.

It's always sold out during dinner, but manage to get it tonight.

Haato: Penang Laksa

The last time, I posted about ice cream at Haato, well, last week we went back and had Penang Laksa instead. Yes, they serve hot food too.

If you want Penang Laksa that's homecook and not so commercialized and have use only fresh and healthy ingredients, try this.

The aunty will tell you about how other people use this and that fish, and the fish that she used. etc.. hehe.. interesting lady.

p/s: Happy Valentine's Day to all!

Rong Liang: Shao La

This shop is located behind the Clementi West St 2 market. It used to be located in a coffeeshop just beside the market. It grew popular and now occupies 2 shop lots.

If you like food covered with lots of sauce, maybe this is a place for you. But it's a tad salty, you can guess from the pictures. :-p

The rice that's covered with soy gravy.

This is a fav soup. Szechuan veg soup. I like szechuan veg since young, so anything with it makes me happy :-)

This is the roast chicken wings.

The quack quack animal, duckie!

The "cha shao" and "shao rou". Roast pork and crispy skin pork.

We ordered a tofu dish as well.

OK, we are not gluttons. We had 6 people sharing the food above. You get quite full. We had another soup too, water crest soup.

The Daily Scoop! of ice cream...

The Daily Scoop is a ice cream shop that makes their ice cream at the same premises. It's one of the nice ice cream shop, also in the West of Singapore.

It's located at Sunset Way, in a place called Clementi Arcade.

If only, I live next door, then I can really have daily scoop!

I ordered Chocolate Ice Cream. I love anything chocolate. They also served it in a ice cream bowl that's super cold, so your ice cream does not melt so quickly.

Colleague ordered, err I forgot what her ordered. haha... he's the only one who ordered double scoop and with choc coated cone too!

We all went in a group, here's a pic of those who ordered cones. Most of them ordred Durian.

Try it, you'll love it!

Haato Ice Cream - another ice cream discovery in the west

This post is really really fresh off the press. These photos were taken like 1 hour ago.

A few friends, we were talking about Jap food, and someone said, I know a place that has ice cream. Err it's 10 pm now, still open? Oh yes it is!

It's called Haato. It's located at 5 Ridgewood Close. (The Mt Sinai area)

Look at the flavours they have. Guess what I ordered?

I had White Sesame and Red Bean.

Some photos to let you see it at all angles.

There's waffles too! This is waffles with Chocolate Gelato.

This place has board games you can play too. We played 3 rounds of Sudoku. Yes at nearly midnight, we were so brain dead!

Stay tuned. I have been to another ice cream place few days ago, also in the West of Singapore. I shall post it soon.

Popiah at Clementi Kopitiam

If you like to queue for food, try this popiah stall in Clementi. You can wait over half an hour for it. I can't see any specialty in it, except for the wait. haha... Anyway it cost $1.20 each.

Come here if you like to queue like everyone else. :-p
(no, i did not queue for it haha... someone else did)

It's the kopitiam opposite OCBC, behind Fairprice.

Hawker Food: Bak Kut Teh

It was last Saturday morning, I was hungry while viewing Food Blogs like Rasa Malaysia and Sim Cooks etc.. then a friend called, ey wanna go eat at Botak Jones at Clementi? But the queue was too long, so we ended up at a Kopitiam beside Clementi McDonalds. Here's what we ate.

Bak Kut Teh - $4

Kiam Chai (Salted Veg) - $1

It's not something very spectacular, but it's not bad lor. Can eat, wont "phwee" it out of your mouth kind. haha.

But it reminds me few years ago in Melb, we cooked Bak Kut Teh, our ang moh neighbours caught the smell, knock at our doors and ask, what are you cooking that smell so good? yes, we gave them part of our dinner.

Nasi Bryani - SKG Muslim Food, Clementi Block 447

This is today's lunch. Nasi Bryani from what we usually call the Thaksin Coffee Shop. (Huh? Because there's a Thaksin noodles stall there lah...)

Not too bad, they use to serve in metal plates that has compartments, but it seems that they have changed it to the normal melamine plates now...

$4 for chicken bryani, and $3.50 for mutton byrani.

Claypot Rice - Clementi Block 328

Claypot Rice. They are rice cooked inside claypots with chicken meat, salted fish, chinese sausages on top of it. This pictures are taken from the Clementi Block 328 Claypot Rice stall. The one that you have to wait for at least half an hour. They cook the rice from the pot and not the short cuts one that many other stalls do.

The rice comes like this, hot and steaming.

Then you put oil and black sauce over it. Depends on how oily and how black you want the rice to be, it's your choice.

Not too much for us. No oil for us too.

Then you stir and mix everything vigorously. As the claypot is really hot, you got to stir fast before the bottom gets burnt!

After all the hard work stirring, this is what is on my bowl.

Enjoy your food....
